PyroAg Helping Support Biological Turf Management at KDV Sports
How can Wood Vinegar fit into a biological approach to managing high-performance turf?
In this interview, Glenn Finlay from One Earth QLD speaks with KDV Sports Superintendent Andrew Glenn about the Gold Coast facility’s approach to turf management and the role PyroAg Wood Vinegar plays within its broader biological program.
With more than 30 years of experience across golf courses, sports fields and turf management in Australia and internationally, Andrew discusses why KDV Sports began looking beyond conventional turf practices and focusing more closely on soil biology, nutrient cycling and the natural processes occurring below the surface.

Rethinking Turf Management
Located near sensitive waterways and wetland environments, KDV Sports set out to develop a turf management system that reduced its reliance on synthetic inputs while remaining practical and cost-effective.
Rather than focusing solely on feeding the plant, Andrew and his team began concentrating on establishing and supporting the biology within the soil.
This included encouraging indigenous microorganisms, returning grass clippings to the soil and supporting the natural cycling of nutrients and organic material.
Where Wood Vinegar Fits
PyroAg Wood Vinegar has been incorporated into the KDV Sports program through regular applications alongside other biological inputs.
Andrew explains that product quality and consistency were important when selecting a Wood Vinegar, particularly clarity and the level of impurities within the product.
After trialling other options, KDV Sports chose PyroAg Wood Vinegar and has continued incorporating it within the facility's turf program.
Andrew also discusses how Wood Vinegar is used alongside other inputs within the system, rather than as a standalone solution.
Changes Observed at KDV Sports
During the interview, Andrew shares a number of observations from the biological turf program, including changes in the soil profile, reduced thatch accumulation, reduced water use and low levels of pest and disease pressure during the period discussed.
He also highlights the importance of economics.
By returning nutrients to the soil, reducing some inputs and simplifying parts of the turf management program, KDV Sports has been able to consider soil performance, environmental management and operating costs together.
