PyroAg was featured on ABC Landline as part of The Business of Biochar, exploring Australia’s developing biochar industry and the opportunities emerging from pyrolysis in agriculture.

Presented by Landline reporter Kerry Staight, the feature looks at how agricultural residues from almond, grape and tree crops can be transformed through pyrolysis into biochar, while also producing valuable co-products including Wood Vinegar.

Wood Vinegar from Pyrolysis

As part of the story, PyroAg Co-Founder Chad Sheppeard discusses Wood Vinegar and its potential role in agricultural systems.

Wood Vinegar is produced during pyrolysis when gases released from heated biomass are captured, cooled and condensed into liquid. The resulting Wood Vinegar contains a complex mixture of naturally occurring organic compounds and can be refined for agricultural use.

Speaking with ABC, Chad explained how Wood Vinegar interacts with soil biology:

“It actually feeds the microbes in the soil and helps the bugs in the soil grow in diversity and population, which then helps the plants' uptake nutrients out of the soil.”

This relationship between Wood Vinegar, soil biology and nutrient availability continues to be an important area of interest for PyroAg, supported by ongoing research and field application.

Turning Agricultural Residues into Useful Products

The Landline feature also explores the broader opportunity for pyrolysis to make productive use of agricultural residues.

Rather than focusing on a single product, the process can produce biochar alongside co-products such as Wood Vinegar, creating new opportunities to extract value from biomass.

For PyroAg, Wood Vinegar represents the agricultural side of this process, providing Australian growers with a practical input that can be integrated into existing farming systems.
